You know I wondered the same thing myself and did some research to find the best value/performance chip

That would be the Core 2 duo 6400 or 6600. The 6400 comes pretty close to the perfomance levels of the AMD FX-62 (AMD's best processor and is probably 10-15% slower, BUT it costs about 1/4-1/5 the price of the AMD FX-62.

The Core 2 Duo 6600 almost matches AMD FX-62 whilst costing about 1/3-1/4 of it's price.

The MAJOR downer I found with the Core 2 Duo's is that because they are fairly new chips, you will have a more limited choice of motherboards for them opposed to the AMD X2 chips.

If the Core 2 Duo's prove to be too expensive then a really good alternative would be the AMD Athlon X2 4600 or 4800. These are really good chips with tons of support hardware.

Interesting enough the Athlon X2 gives you the best value/$ performance for all the high end chips currently available right now.

Sedaine pretty much covered it all in his post. All I can add is that the Pentium 4 was last years processor. It was never really as good as advertised anyway. Intel actually reverted to Pentium 3 architecture to develop their new processors. Core 2 Duo is the best processor on the market right now although it may not be the most cost effective.

Core 2 Duo is the better of the two, but the real answer to your question is: What are you going to use it for? Unless you plan on playing the newest games or doing a lot of video editing, I would simply go with the cheaper of the two.

Intel Core 2 Duo rules right now, and is cheaper than slower AMD AM2 socket processors.
