I like this question. There are several different ways of looking at this question, but I'm going to answer it literally. Since you asked in English, I will answer with regards to English speakers, as different languages have different varieties of words, manners of speaking, etc etc etc. Also, I am going to look at individual words and ignore redundancies. For instance, if my first word was "Momma," then "Momma" is counted once and every time I said "Momma" thereafter is not counted.

There are approximately 988,968 words in the English Language. I would GUESS that the average person uses about half (many of them repeatedly) which is, then, about 494,484 words.

As a bonus (from my linguistics geek days in grammar school)... "Zyzzyva" is a word and is worth a bunch of points in Scrabble. :) Plus, I bet it's use puts me at least at 494,485.
