It is supposed to add versatility to the sink. The deep side can be for washing dishes or soaking pans, the shallow for other functions such as washing vegetables. Or the deep side can be used for washing dishes using soapy water while the shallow side can be used for rinsing the dishes by dipping them into plain water.
