When I get one that picks up the food odors - I just dissolve baking soda in water, and let it sit in the container on the counter overnight.
Non toxic, cheap, effective, and you don't have to worry about washing it within an inch of its life to remove the odor-remover before you let food touch it again.

Let it soak with water and baking soda for about an hour.
Dry it in full sunlight as the uv will take out the smell from pvc and other plastics.
This works well on plastic garbage containers and cat litter boxes too.

I read once that lemon juice works well on hands that smell like onion or fish, after handling those foods. I would try the lemon juice on the containers to see how that works for you.

Washing plastic and reusing it too much will break it down, which will contaminate your food. Don't bother cleaning it. Replace it.
