This has happened before. I have a suggestion.

When it comes time to lock up- simply do that lock up. Let the customers that remain inside know that in 5 minutes the store will be closing and they'll need to come forward to the registers to be processed.

You let each one out and lock the door behind them.

IF this is a restaurant, then you are sort of stuck until they finish eating, however, you can still lock the door so no one else enters the establishment.

Yes and I HATE it! I've actually turned the lights off and stood by the door with my keys in my hand and some rude woman was still wandering around looking at the books ( I work in a library) I had already explained to her that my computer was turned off so she couldn't even check anything out. I stopped being polite to her the third time she did it..... grrr

This is annoying all year but i get my revenge on xmas eve when the store is advertised to close at 6pm and i close the doors at 4.30pm . let the folk in the store have 30 more minutes then throw them out. i love peoples faces at the window shouting 'LET ME IN' sorry but you've had 363 days to do your xmas shopping. Sick? I don't think so.

When I worked in the restaurant business, at a very nice place called Houston's, we had a police officer at the store every night, and one hour after close he booted everyone out.

No. Tell them it is closing time and they have 5 more minutes. Go ahead and lock up so no one else comes in.

All the time. It's against company policy to shove them kicking and screaming out the door for some reason.
