If the same guages are used for both R-12 and R-134a, and you're wondering about cross contamination between the two types of freon and the oil, probably nothing. Although the two types of oil are not compatible, the amount in the lines is negligible. If you are wondering as to the accuracy, R-12 guages are calibrated differently than R-134a, so the reading you get with R-12 guages on an R-134a system will not be accurate. You can calculate the differential between the two guages, but nothing beats the right tool for the job if you want it right.

There is no provision for a charging system to service both unless it is a "Smart Cart" arrangement. The hoses, fittings, and connections are different from one system to the other. There are A/C/ Service Carts called smart-carts that service both, but the components of each are isolated from each other.
There are "conversion" kits available to convert R-12 to R-134a. The cheapest are Merely a conversion for the service port and a little PAG oil. It works MOST of the time, but isn't recommended for a car with a long future, or where efficiency has to be the greatest. Many times these "conversions" fail in a fairly short time.

if it is used you will get a more accurate reading on you freon pressure,,and your air conditioner will work better than just adding a can of freon to it without knowing what the pressure or anything else is reading,,good luck with it,,i hope this help,s.
