I don't know. But it's so true. Black isn't beautiful anymore. In some places, if your skin is too dark you can't work in banks and stuff. Projecting the wrong image. I was always taken the mick out of at school because my skin is quite dark. I know people who even bleach their skin. Being dark is different from having a tan! A tan is still considered to be "fair skinned".

I'm happy with my skin though. Not much I can do about it anyway! =)

I don't have a problem with fair skin. The upside of being fair is that you never will look as old as you really are. Also, I just want to add that the whole tanning bed and sun bathing thing gets very ugly and unattractive when it's abused. Those people just look so pretentious and that NEVER looks natural.

Speaking as a woman of color, we have had continuous debates and conversation in many black communities over this sensitive subject. If you do a study of the history of Africans in America you will learn that dating back to slavery there was a believe that those who by appearances seemed closer to the white race were favored. In the US white slave owners allowed the lighter skinned slaves in their house. Because they (house slaves) were treated better it caused distance, and some resentments between the field slaves and the house slaves that lives on to this day in free America. In Africa in certain countries it is illegal for lighter skinned blacks to marry or mix with darker skinned blacks. In several African countries that fell under British rule lighter skinned Africans where favored.

I have notices even with Asian populations here where I live in Northern California mixing with whites is a preference. In my area the new thing is White men/Asian women. I have Asian girlfriends who only date white guys.
Back to the question of fair skin, I have a friend who is an African Immigrant from Ethiopia. She is very dark skinned with long black wavy natural hair that falls down the middle of her back. She is probably one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen, so really beauty is in the eyes of the beholder

What's wrong with fair skin? Why are tans considered healthy and beautiful, when all it is doing is ruining your skin?

Because they are ignorant and have no self pride(worth). People pay a lot of money and risk getting cancer to fry themselves in the sun for a darker skin. So think about that. As the saying goes"the darker the berry, the sweeter the juice"!!!!!!

It all began when wealthy people did not work outdoors or work at all for that matter in the sun. You could look at a woman and tell by her complexion if she came from money. Now its the condition of your face that reflects beauty not if your pale or dark. Funny how times change huh??

why do some people associate dark skin with beauty?

It's from the days when rich people didn't have to work outdoors all day and get tanned or ravaged by the weather. It's still a subliminal sign of high birth.

In where, Asia? Here in America, if your skin is fair, people just call you pasty and tell you to get a tan.

People from counteries in Asia generally think this as its is rare for someone to be fair in those countries so its desirable. However countries with fair people ren't as bothered as its the norm for people to be fair.
