There's a reason it's costly. Your car has a key security chip that needs to be programmed for the car. This is your passive sercurity system which gets you discounts on your insurance and makes it so your car can not be started w/o special keys codes on the key.

1 Watch for "service specials", sometimes we get mailings for 20% off parts.....
2 call around to see if prices are the same at different dealers

Some locksmiths are licensed to do this, but it is still very costly, especially if he has to travel to the vehicle to do it.

A hardware store with a key making machine will not likely have the ability to do this.

Try the yellow pages. Remember, not all locksmiths can do this.

you can go to hardware store and have keys cut for ignition but it must be programmed to your anti-theft system and yes that has to be done by dealership depending on model year.some newly cut keys will crank the vehicle only a few times.some newly cut keys not programmed to computer will keep you from using your old key so be careful.my sugestion is pay the dealership.Blake

A lot of hardware stores carry them now, for the exact reason you have stated. The dealerships are too greedy!!!
