I have not seen the movie but I have read the book.
There are some parts of the book that refer to sexual relations. The heroine of the story is "raped" by a Doctor examining her and she has sex with a client.
There are parts in the book (early in the story) of child abuse and abandonment. I think some of the themes may be too adult and over the heads of those under 13.
You may want to read the story with the person under 13 to be sure he/she understands the story.

I'd say it depends on the 13 year old. There is a foiled rape attempt in the movie, as well as a sex scene and other scenes alluding to sexuality, however, some of these scenes are more graphic in the book than in the movie.
By the way, "geisha" does not translate to "prostitute." As it says in the book, "geisha" is more accurately translated as "entertainer." Sex is not really part of a geisha's job, however temptation is.

It depends on the maturity level of said 13-year-old. At 13, I probably would have understood the language of the book, but there are situations that are intended for more mature readers. In the end, it is a decision for a parent to make for their own child, and whether they feel their child is ready to read (or see if it's the movie) that particular book.

Dispite I didn't like the book I believe that both the movie and the book are appropriate for a young reader.
There are some sex scenes and some references that might be a bit strong for a child, but these days children have a somewhat greater level of maturity (I think).
Just in case, I'd say that parent guidance couldn't hurt.

I've read and watched the book and movie, respectively. The movie might be a little more appropriate as it is rated PG-13, though the only thing that might be questionable in the book would be descriptions of things pertaining to sex. Either one is good in its own way.

There's a bit of a sex scene thing going on in the movie. Depends on how you feel about your kids. Kids these days know more than their parents sometimes. Pity eh?
BTW - remember it's Memoirs of a Geisha ... and Geisha pretty much translates to high class prostitute whom, in cultures like Japan may be revered... but how do you feel about it?

Sure- I'd start with the book first though- its an amazing story, especially when it is the entire life of a young geisha told from her perspective but it was written by a white jewish guy! Now, that's writing!

I'd say the movie would be a little risky for a 13 year old due to the graphic sexual content. I'd say preview it first and decide for yourself? I never read the book so I can't make an appropriate comment on that.

sorry, but no. ive read both the book and seen the movie and its a little too much for someone that young. unless, the under thirteen year old is very mature for their age. i think the movie is more appropriate overall, but the kid probably wont understand much of it. the book is very graphic and has a lot of sexual content in it. read and watch them first to give it ur final call.
