You all seem to enjoy recieving flowers, but why? You can't eat them, drink them or spend them. Surely a bag of carrots or a turnip would be more practical?

Hehehe, Yeah, I prefer to receive radishes or broccoli, that way I'll develop a little smelly something to give back to him as a Thank you for the "Oh so, practical gift"

Flowers are pretty, some of them smell nice, and its a SIMPLE yet totally non practical gesture of affection. My guy brings me roses from his garden. Its the sweetest thing a guy has ever done for me. Sometimes he brings me vegetable too, either way its much more thoughtful than a gift that's bought.

The reason is very simple, girls like flowers because it makes them feel girlie and shows that you were thinking about them. No other reason, the thought behind the flowers are more important than the flowers themselves BUT if you were to get your girl a bag of carrots, although more practical and still showing that you're thinking about her, the flowers will make her feel all girlie inside and that's what counts. Good luck! Oh, and if you're really opposed to the flower thing, don't worry, not ALL girls and into that crap, I for one can't stand when a guy gets me flowers (my boyfriend loves that cuz he's TOTALLY not a candy and flowers guy).

LOL... you are right it would be more practical.

An educated guess would be that throughout history the actions of a gentleman (expressing his sentiments) presenting a lady with flowers as an outward sign of his affections has captured the heart of women and their love of flowers. It's the act and the loving sentiments tied to them.

Flowers used to have symbolic meanings, Roses for love etc.It became practice to give women flowers symbolizing different sentiments. In modern times, giving flowers to your sweetheart is a throwback to that tradition.

I love getting flowers, and I buy them for myself sometimes too, just because they look nice in the house. I never buy plants because I always kill them off...flowers do that anyway so I don't feel guilty!

Flowers are nice, but not a necessity. I'd rather get a gift that is more original and from the heart. Flowers seem like a "safe" gift.

I don't like flowers but it is the idea that the other person thought enough to get them for you that counts.

Nothing is more romantic than a fresh bouquet of flowers. It says that "I have been thinking of you" or "I love you". Flowers, any kinds, smell great and just make us feel wonderful!

I hate flowers for all the reasons that you have given. I've told every man I've ever dated to NOT buy me flowers. Most woman like them because of what they symbolize to our society. When a man gives them to a woman, it means he has romantic intentions with her. We all like to be flattered like that and then be reminded of that compliment every time we look at the flowers. It's not the flowers... its what they mean. Don't send ME flowers though... :)

Because they are beautiful, delicate, and sweet smelling - just like us!
P.S If you aren't getting anywhere with the ladies - forget the turnip.
