I do not know about Stephen Hawkins not answering such question, but I appreciated his books and I can understand why.
Only religions dare to give an answer to such questions.
Scientists and philosophers honestly they can't. Scientists and their formulas can tell us of a Big Bang. But was there a Big Crush before that? Who knows!
Our limited nature and experience makes that we are always looking for the beginning, the end, and a reason for everything.
Maybe those questions simply don't make sense when applied to the Universe. It might just be there, endless and meaningless, or at least out of reach for our imagination.

His disease has reached the point where he can no longer communicate his theories. He has been working on a multi-universe idea, but I think that he realises that the concept is flawed. However, having read and watched a lot of documentaries on the different theories that relate to Cosmology, there is a theory that due to the laws of physics breaking down at the heart of a Black Hole, coinciding with superstring theory and that they resonate at different frequencies within different dimensions, when the matter is broken down, the dimensions could coalesce into dimensional portals where matter may disappear.

that's right Indigo, a man who has had physics theories published to the acclaim of the scientific world in spite of crippling motor neurone disease is a chicken, just posting for the points then! at least say you're posting for the points and not slag off one of the bravest men alive today!

I don't know if Stephen Hawking has given up on answering the answer to the creation of the universe, but if he has can you blame him, he's slagged off by so many ignorant people and he's faced them with grace and fortitude, so he may have decided to give up on one thing in his entire life, give him a break! he's contributed so much and even Einstein quietened down in his later years.

Because it is an unanswerable question. Simple as that. This is something that neither science nor religion can answer, because neither can explain absolutely everything. We are going to have to admit to ourselves that it is simply beyond human comprehension.

which answer to the creation was he attempting to answer? many people wouldn't listen even if he were right. It would probably just start another war.

He says that to know that would be to know the mind of God. I think he means that it is not for us to know. I would agree with his assessment.
