I have a file that I can not delete. It is part of an old program I no longer need but when I go to delete it the message I get is...

"File is not accessible.
file or directory is corrupted and unreadable

I have tried to delete and to drag to the re-cycle bin but I keep getting the same message.
I really need to delete this as de-frag comes up with the same message identifing the file.
Ican not de-frag untill I have deleted this file and my system really needs a cleen up

Thanks

You should first probably start off by rebooting your computer in safe mode. Once you have done that deleting the file in question should be no problem and if you want it gone for good use StompSoft's Digital File Shredder Pro or similar product to permanently overwrite this data forever.

Last time I had a similar problem, I took an old DOS utility software called Norton Commander to delete it. You can search for it on the Internet, though I don't know if getting a "free" copy would be legal. Another option could be booting from a Linux Live CD, accesing the hard disk and deleting the file. Hope this helps.

Have you tried uninstalling the program where the file came from? Did you use this file to create another one and both files are open.....then you need to close both files and then delete the one you don't want. Did you try to go to the "Add or Remove" file and delete it from there? Other wise try going to help & support section and see if they can help you with one of their files

Reboot your pc.
While it's booting press f8 until a menu comes up.
Select the option to boot into safe-mode.
After logging in you should be able to delete the file.
Then reboot the pc as normal.

What ever the name of the file you cant delete, save something else in the same name and that way it deletes it. if it doesnt work then save everything on a disc and **** your hard-drive.
