Princess Di. What amazed me about my reaction was I never really paid much attention to her, never read the gossip magazines. Couldn't care less.

When I heard she was in serious condition from an automobile accident, I thought "well, OK, serious condition is usually no biggie." With that thought, I went to bed.

The following morning I heard the news, and suddenly I felt very, very sad. I got deeply entwined in the tragedy and got up very early to watch the funeral. I think I was "slightly off" for quite a while.

And yes, poor Steve Irwin's demise got to me too, because I'll miss his crazy antics. I so enjoyed his shows.

John Lennon. One of my all-time favorite musicians, writers, singers. Had a huge impact on the culture, and me. I was a teenager when it happened, and I still feel the loss. It sounds silly for someone I never met. But there it is. Plus, the cruel, senseless manner of his death. A car accident, overdose, mugging, case of cancer or ANYTHING else would not have hurt me so.

I was at the Central Park memorial, again to "pay my respects" as if he were family, or a friend. He was a hero of mine - I was (and am) a big fan.

Thinking of what might have been - what he could have produced - is heartbreaking.

Although like others he is idealized a bit too much in death. The music scene was kind of down on him until he died. Maybe not without reason - he hadn't done much and was just coming out with something new - but still the change once he died was very noticeable.

JFK. Nothing comes close. It was the end of one era and the begining of another. Vietnam might never have happened for the 58,000 who died there(our side. multiply that by a factor of 10 or more for the other side). Being in Vietnam changed me completely. If Kennedy had lived he would have avoided an all out conflict for a dubious cause. Number two would be the death of Martin Luther King. But some good came out of it. It galvanized the Civil Rights movement. Number three would be the death of Robert Kennedy. He was likely to have been the Democratic challenger to Nixon. What a different world it would have been if he had lived and won.

I remember the exact moment I heard that princess Diana died... It was surreal... I had been a very loyal fan since her wedding to Prince Charles, I remember sitting in our living room on the farm with my grandmother and all the ladies of the surrounding farms (we had the only colour television) to watch the (not so) blessed union. My grandmother made cake and scones and everybody was drinking English breakfast tea... I loved the her shy smile and the way she blushed when reporters interviewed her. Later I bought every magazine that had her face on it or even an article in it about her... I could not help feeling guilty about those purchases when I heard how the whole scenario panned out. She was once, twice, three times a lady, but not blind to her own faults or to the desperate plight of the suffering children all over the world.

Actually, I half--expected that John Lennon could die a violent death. George Harrison, though, dying of disease, woke me up to the fact that my teen years were far in the past.

Peter Jennings was a shock to me.

But not Steve Irwin.!. Why all the hype? You wrestle with wild animals, you risk getting chewed up. Q.E.D.

I think that Princess Diana's death became such a huge mediatic event that none of us was able to escape its impact, eventhough it really meant nothing at a personal level.

Jesus Christ is the person whose death had the biggest impact on me. The reason is because He died for me even though I didn't deserve it, and took all the punishment I deserved in my place.
He made the ultimate sacrifice in order to save me from myself.
