When going to UK immigration in Africa is it common practice for them to ask fr you to put up between £500 and £1000 in case something goes wrong when you have no relatives or friends in the UK,how do you get this money back from them?

Hiya.
No they just want to see that you have approx £1000 in you're bank account, so you cant get stuck this side.
They never take the money, they just need bank statements to prove it's in youre account, and where it came from (proof you didnt steal it)

Sounds rather ODD that you have to put any money DOWN, you have to be able to PROVE you have funds available to exist without relying on government help...

Some students in New Zealand were asked to put a bond of $5000 (about £2000 or US $3000 ) which would be returned to them when they got back to NZ.
While they did have $5000, they didn't have $5000 spare...it was supposed to be for the trip.

I have never heard of anyone having to hand over any money, just to prove you ahve some, and credit/debit cards

Here in the UK,We will give you money when you arrive,if you bring children with you we will also give you a house.

You need to prove that you have a credit card or debit card. Also travel cheques are ok!
