Water is used in industries for cooling machinery and parts, as a solvent in many processes, as a lubricant in many more, and as a cutting tool under VERY high pressure. It is also used in cleaning processes, with or without soap and abrasives.

Older pipes, made of cast iron or lead, were often subject to clogging by mineral deposits (scales). Brass pipes tend to stay free of scale for longer periods. Today, low-pressure piping is often made of PVC and other rigid plastics. High-pressure piping is often made of rubber reinforced by an external steel mesh. And any piping used in the processing and preparation of food is, by law, made of stainless steel.
