It's all about who you know! If you know producers, other agents or managers, and people who work behind the scenes in the music industry, then that's a big help. It also helps to live in an area with a lot of aspiring musicians.

If you wanted, you could start by working with a current agent or manager. My aunt was a band manager's assistant out in LA, and during the amount of time she worked there she made a lot of contacts. Eventually she opened up her own agency with a few clients and it's expanded into a pretty profitable operation.
