When the " service engine soon " light comes on but all the fluids are full, what else could be wrong? They sometimes call that the " idiot light "because it doesn't always mean anything. Any suggestions?

It's one of two things: 1. You are due for service and the light has to be reset by a mechanic, or 2. Your car has an emission control problem... a bad oxygen sensor, a loose fuel cap, bad vacuum hose etc. Go to your local AutoZone and have them diagnose it for you for free.

It could be that the oxygen sensor is failing. However, it's most likely a simple mechanical counter that is set to go off after a certain number of miles. I had a car that tripped the "Service Engine Soon" light every 60,000 miles, whether it needed servicing or not. The switch to turn it off was on the back of the instrument cluster, which was a major pain to get to. Really annoying. (The car was a 1987 Audi.)

It's probably just a switch that needs to be reset.

The 'Service Engine Soon' light should be caused by an emission related component. And being a Ford it very well could be a problem with the EGR system as they seemed to have a lot of problems with them. If you take it to shop or an 'Auto Zone' they can scan the cars computer and get the code from the on board computer which will lead to the problem. Good luck.

Not everything has to do with fluids. It can be your battery, a sensor, plugs, plug wires or even a brake sensor. You dont know till it is read.
It is good to take it in and see what code it pops. It doesnt mean something is wrong but something can be causing that light to come on. It may be something simple or something not so simple. You wont know what is wrong till you take it in. You dont need to go to a dealership (unless it is warranty item and they pay for it).
Another way to test this (depending on the car) is disconnect the battery for a few minutes and reconnect it. Start your car and see if it has reset. If it hasnt then take it in. Some cars you cant do that to due to the ignition system. If it is disconnected you have to get it towed in to get the ignition rekeyed, it sucks but cars today suck you know.

You did not tell us which year and make it was, but on some cars that light means there is some sort of problem, not just to service it. You need to talk to a mechanic, or google for your car and that service engine soon words.

What year car is it? If it is a fairly new one, it is telling you to take it into your dealer for service. If it is an older model car just send me an email and I will tell you what to do.
