I am at school, on a wireless network that is run through the universtiy. My web browser works (obviously) but I cannot connect to AIM. It keeps telling me that it could not connect because the session timed out. I dont know whats going on here. I cant get a hold of tech support on campus because they are experiencing tons of students calling about problems in their dorms. Anyone have any suggestions?

My school blocks AIM and chatting websites like hi5 and myspace. It is most likely the network..to make sure, use one of their library computers and see if they allow you to use AIM.

You school may be blocking the AIM website/ service or at least the standard port(s) used for chatting.

AIM has an "AUTO CONFIGURE" option under MY AIM, EDIT OPTIONS, SIGN On/Off, CONNECTION. Try using that to see if it can find workable settings to get through your school's network to make a connection. It will try various connection protocols and ports, so you may get lucky.

You may also want to look at this from the AIM Faq section:

Most likely the school is filtering the internet connection it is offering to students to include instant messengars. Might want to check the schools technology website to verify or contact the tech support on campus. I have had similiar issue with other on campus wireless signals that were being filtered.

there are a ton of reasons why AIM isn't working:

>there could be an overload of students using the same network and trying to access AIM at the same time.
>the network could be blocking AIM
>something's wrong with the network
>something's wrong with your computer

i'm no professional, but that's my guess.

See if one of your friends have AIM working at school. Check their settings for AIM and then duplicate them on your computer. If you can't find anyone at school with working AIM - either you need to make some more friends (we all need more friends) or the school has AIM blocked and locked.

their blocking the port that AIM runs on.
this is a very common thing across most campuses now.
if you know how you can change the port that AIM runs on.
if i would use AIM i would tell you, but i don't, so you will have to ask another question on how to do that.

It could be related to the other problems, or they may be blocking AIM. Check with the adminstration to see if it's against school policy.

Schools have firewalls that prevent messengers from working (as well as other applications such as P2P), at least in public. What you do in private (home) the school can't judicate.

The school might have a program like Eagle that can block certain sites (not just porn) but myspace etc

Maybe your network has blocked AIM. Many network administrators do that..i.e. block IM type softwares.
