Compliment. First impressions are rarely correct. I get that all the time just because I am blonde.

Well I would take as both-at first an insult because obviously they that at first glance you're a dumbass-but then I'd take it as a compliment because they are the dumbasses being arrogant and the fact that they fessed up not so much in an apologetic way, at least it tells you that they've changed their mind and for the good :)-once a teacher of mine stated kind of like the same remark-but she likes to tease a lot-I guess she didn't think I knew what the word xenophile meant, and after I used it casually she was flabbergasted I knew big words-so I was pissed but then I realized there was no reason to be, (at least now)she came to the realization that I am intellectual.

If someone says that, then although it may have been intended as a compliment, it's not.
if they had said "wow, you're a lot smater than I thought you were" that might be complimentary. But the fact that they screwed up the grammer in 2 crucial areas indicates that they themselves are no mental giant, and are therefore incapable of determining your intelligence.

It could be that they thought you are smart but you are even smarter. Which, I think, would be a compliment.

Flat out insult in my opinion. I get that sometimes because I'm quiet and I don't always speak up right away. Most people don't mean it that way so I try to be nice about it but it bothers me. It's just a case of people needing to think before they speak.

Both...but compliment above all. They wanted to insult you by letting you know they thought you were dumb but stood corrected by admitting their misjudgement and complimenting you on being smart. In turn proving they aren't as smart as they thought they were!!

Being a lot smarter than he thought you were is better than him thinking you are smarter than you are.

It's more of a reflection on the person saying it, for pre-judging you so quickly. It's probably a comment not worth reflecting about. It's an awkward attempt at being nice...

"More smarter??" I wouldn't care if it was meant as an insult or a compliment. Anyone who constructs a sentence like that isn't too bright anyway.
