i don't know if you mean ancient, because then you could easily look up aristotle, socrates or rene descartes... but if you want someone more modern siddhartha by hermann hesse is very thought provoking and changed my life (it's partially about understanding versus knowledge). hmm... maybe upton sinclair? the jungle? i'm not sure... good luck.

"The Metaphysical Club" by Louis Menand is a relatively new book with great ideas. It also won the Pulitzer Price. I've read excerpts of it and it's a nice look at American philosophical ideas toward our history.

Metaphysical Club is obviously not a novel so if you're interested in a little fiction that gets philosophical, check out "A Clockwork Orange" by Anthony Burgess - it has great themes that deal with philosophical and humanistic ideas that are put into action.

I've always been fond of the work of Elzie Segar (the creator of Popeye the Sailor). There's just something sorta "zen" about a sailor who never actually goes near the water...
