he was a great ambassador for what he was passionate about - his family and protecting and conserving animals of all types (even the less popular ones). he made animal planet what it is today and taught me so much about animals in his myriad shows. i think his loss will be felt for a long time and hope that someone with his knowledge and charisma is able to fill the large shoes left empty by his untimely death. my condolences to his family.

even if you didn't always agree with how fanatical he was in his views or loves of strange and unpopular animals, you had to admire and respect his dedication to his work. unafraid, unapologetic, and uncompromising.

He hasn't neccesarily made me want to do exactly what he did, but he is an example of not being afraid to do what you love regardless of political or public pressure. He knew what inspired him and he wasn't afraid to speak out.

and btw - to the people saying he was selfish for doing what he did - his wife knew what he did for a living before she married him and they had children. she supported him and was a partner to him in many of his adventures. it is not thoughtful to say that he was an idiot or careless when you weren't living his life, or in his shoes. he knew the risks he took and so did his wife. it was their life choice, even if most of us choose to live tamer and quieter lives. :)

Occupational Hazard. I think like the rest of the universe that they are more surprised that he was not taken out by a Crock. The best thing to remember is that he did not linger in some hospital bed. It was a quick and instant death or thats the story until the autopsy report. Steven Irwin, Roy (from Siegfried and Roy) the people that swim with the Great white sharks, people who climb Mt Everest. These are people who defy death and keep in the back of their minds that there is a chance of getting killed.

It is a tragic thing, but he died doing what he loved the most. He always knew there was a risk. A great loss but he leaves a great legacy also. My condolences go out to his wife and children.

yeah, he was struck by a stingray barb that went through his heart. There's a video of this that shows him taking it out, and he dies a minute or 2 later... its sad.. i hope the video never becomes public.
