My baby shower was a few weeks ago. Our boy is due in 5 weeks...
I was clueless about what babies need, but I registered at Target and Babies R Us. Both sites offer suggested and popular registry items. I started out with those things...
Then I asked my friends who have kids to take a look at the registry and let me know if I left out anything crucial, and they gave me suggestions.
I also made sure that when I chose an item, I read the comments from other people who have had the item and see if there was any good/bad feedback. I would also look up customer comments for the items on Amazon.com. Lots of people give feedback on that site. But dont register at Amazon, cuz the majority of people won't shop there.
I don't recommend putting too much on your list that is ONLY available online. I got none of the items that were only available online through Taget or Babies R Us. Most people prefer to walk in to a store and pick things out.
I also had a variety of clothing items on the registry. No one purchased the clothes from the registry, although they did buy clothes that THEY thought were cute. Which turned out just fine.
I also made sure I had items on there in a variety of price ranges to allow people to shop within their own budget. I think I got one or two big ticket items where a few people went in on the gift together.

Get the book called "Baby Bargains"--it'll tell you what you really need and what you can do without, plus all the latest reviews on baby stuff from actual consumers.
Some advice: don't register for all infant/baby items. You'll be glad you got a booster seat or a potty training seat at your shower so you don't have to worry about that kind of stuff when the time comes.
One thing we registered for that we looooovvvved...it's a fold up chair that is used at restaurants (and at home too), that clamps tightly to the table. You can leave it in your car and use it instead of a gross restaurant high chair. I think Graco makes them and they're about $35.

Are you registering at Babies r us? They give you a great list of things to register for. Remember to register for small things as well as large, people like to go in on the big gifts!! Pick a brand of diapers you like and register for them in all sizes, you will need them eventually!!
Oh!!! Don't forget to register for a floppy seat!! It's the cover that you put inside a shopping cart! My son is 17 months old and we are still using it!!

If you register at babiesrus they will give you a list of the stuff that generly goes on a registry. It is very helpful! Register for things you know you need first then add things later.

First of all... Have you got the results from the ultrasound?
Because of course you don't want pink & purple items for a boy!
Why? ...well... You know!...
Anyway, what I did is call the store and get a list...
But you know what was the BEST thing of all, it turned out?
The Diaper Service!!!
You know all those disposables just go into landfills for our babies to have to deal with when they grow up....
Some gift for THEM!! lol!
Also...ask for a professional baby care helper...A true Godsend!!!
Just a few weeks of her service will help you cope!

Go to http://www.walmart.com/catalog/catalog.gsp?cat=426455 and click on checklists, that will give you a list of things to register. Register all you can to give people options.
