I think you're referring to the short story, "The Man Without A Country," by Edward Everett Hale. I think it was based on an actual case, but largely fictional. You can read it online at the link below.

I always thought that was a great story as well. Since the one gave a responce where you could read it online, short of you meaning someone else, I just wanted to say how much I liked it too.
