I knew a few people that did this in the 'burbs outside of Philadelphia and they were at their posts with the ploughs before the heavy snow set in.

In a lot of communities, they either take the plow home, or sleep near the machine sheds.
In bigger communities there is almost always a shift at work, so the shift that is 'On' just plows the streets for the next shift to get to work and keep on a truckin'.

I used to walk to work when I did it.
4 a.m. starts were horrible, and sometimes the day lasted to 11 p.m.
