A real actor is someone that is "versatile". Someone that can play different roles in different genres, someone that can switch up their accents. Yes everyone in hollywood and in the movies and on t.v. are actors/acctresses but how many are "true actors/actresses". Those who aren't tend to stick to the types of movies that they are good at. An example, Arnold Schwarzenegger is good at doing action movies, showing his muscles, but in every movie that he did he spoke with his normal accent, he couldn't change it up because he's not a true actor. Where as someone like Tom Hanks or Robin Williams, they have done movies in various genres and have succeeded in every one and they have the oscars to prove it.

Tough call there because some actors get slammed when they do try to go outside what people are used to seeing them.
People were really vicious to Sly and AH-nold when they tried comedy, but Arnold has made some really funny movies.
People attack Keanu all the time for his horrible acting ability. But if he's SO awful why were Speed, Point Break, Matrix movies, and Bill & Ted huge hits?

Robin Williams went to Julliard. Jennifer Aniston didn't. You can't be good and get into Julliard, you have to be the best. They don't take you unless.
A great actor will put different styles into each character. A good actor can play the same role over and over.

People often times get confused.
There is a difference between an ACTOR and a MOVIE STAR(or television star for that matter.). Robin Williams may in fact be very funny, but he is underneath it all, an actor. Tom Cruise may be able to act a little bit, but all of his characters are smarmy/cocky types. He is a movie star.
Actors go with a broader range of role selections... movie (or tv)stars generally do not.

Alot of actors get stereotyped by roles they do and do well. Jim Carrey, for instance. He's so crazy, it would be hard to picture him doing something serious (even though he has once or twice). What makes the difference what kind of role they do as long as they are good at it, anyway?

It's pretty easy to make a lot of money while you keep playing the same, safe role over & over again. The role people love to see you in, and everyone goes to the movies to see.

some actors are good in almost any type of movie: drama, comedy, suspense. but others are just good at one type of movie. for example, you only see russell crowe so far in dramas but julia roberts on the other hand have been in romantic comedies, dramas, and suspense.
