Could a country at peace have made defense contractors 1 trillion+ dollars in 5 short years?

Not sure I understand your comment. How have the contractors made over $1 trillion solely due to the war? You do realize that the DoD is constantly buying weapons, munitions, etc, in every year, right? This includes aircraft (fixed and rotary wing), naval vessels, artillary, vehicles, etc.

Whether we are at war or not.

Because this war has not even cost us $1 trillion over the standard military budget, it makes reasonable people question the source and the accuracy of your numbers.
