Geronimo (1829-1909) was an Apache warrior and chief.

His character has appeared in many movies. The first of these, Geronimo's Last Raid (1912) is considered an American classic.

Story has it that in 1940, the night before a training jump, a group of American paratroopers saw a movie about Geronimo. The next day, when they jumped from the plane, some of the shouted "Geronimo!"

It caught on.
