Depends on your brand. You can fix it from the front as well. There is an opening in the front under the spinning tub you can open and change the belt. It look like the belt is broken. Make sure to unplug the machine before you do anything.

Most late model(after 1970) made washers use a transmission, not belt. You may have a transmission problem, or even a solenoid. Which is what selects which "gear" to put the washer in, like wash spin or rinse.

Don't call a plumber--unless something's wrong with the pipes connected to your washer, a plumber's not going to do you any good. Your best bet is probably going to be to call a repair technician from a place that specializes in washers and have him take a look at the machine. Without being able to see the machine, it's hard to tell what's wrong with it and how to fix it.

does the drum turn when you run it empty? the motor could be going bad - not getting enough juice to turn it. does it shake like mad and then quit? that could be an unbalanced load - take the clothes out and re-arrange them. does it not try to spin at all? that sounds like a belt has snapped.

You'll have to disconect everything then drain it. Open the back access panel and check the belt.
