He was sidelined after another knee surgery. One of your responders stated that it was the start of his career ending knee problems but Orr had 6 surgeries on his knees before leaving junior hockey. His records all came in spite of the pain so when people ask who was the greatest ever and Mario Lemieux fans say if Mario hadn't had his problems, he would be, I watched Orr throughout his entire career and Mario was great but Orr was by far better. And I'm a Gretzky fan.

He had a knee injury. That's why it took the full eight games for Canada to win. Bobby Orr is the best D-man ever!!!

He didn't play because he had injured his knee. It was the beginning of the knee troubles that would eventually derail his career:

I wish I would have had more of a chance to see that guy play. By the time I really knew him, he was on the downside of his career.
Edit - Another post is correct in pointing out that it wasn't his first knee injury. I guess I associate it as being a turning point, since he only played 2 full seasons afterwards.

1975 he suffered his first carrer shaterrring knee injury. Thats when his knees gave out. 1972 he signed the first million dollar contract (5yrs, $200,000/yr). Back then they needed permission to play in series like the Summit Series. The Blackhawk management gave him permission to play in the Canada Cup in 1976.
