The best program I know to keep your computer clean, giving you the choice about what you want to get rid of --cookies etc. -- is CCleaner (short for Crap Cleaner). get it at download.com. If you make a donation you get free upgrades.

Spybot & Ad-aware are free, reliable & keep their files upto date for clearing off Spyware etc.
LOADS of "Free" stuff out there but at the end of the day, you usually get what you pay for and some of the "free" apps cause more problems than they solve.

CCLEANER to get rid of all the crap.
Zone Alarm best firewall.
AVG anti virus.
Ad-Adware to get rid off trojans etc.
