my mom won't get anything that is a rodent and my dad is allergic to cats. I want something that will not sit there all day while I watch it behind glass. Also my parents aren't ready to get a dog. What do you suggest? Serious answers only, please.

birds are nice, if you don't mind the occasional chattering of some parrots, plus if you have a newspaper subscription there is a great way to recycle ....yay? lizards are also nice but can be temper-mental they also need warming lights too keep them toasty. if you do go with a snake , just make sure you know how to handle them , they can be very bothersome if they escape from their cage....they will sometimes hide at the top (or wherever you remove a panel to feed them) in hopes of escape, very crafty.hmm seems like you have a lot of restrictions between your parents. best of luck on your hunt

A cockatiel or parakeet. In general, cockatiels are tamer than parakeets, but if you get a hand-fed bird or one that has been handled from babyhood, either one is great. Not every pet store has hand-fed or tame birds, but some do, and then the hand-fed birds usually cost more, but they're worth it. Or you can look in the newspaper for a breeder selling young birds. You usually get a tamer bird for less money from a breeder. Handle the bird first to see that it is tame. Clip the wings so it will not escape; the breeder or pet store will do this for you, and you can learn how to do it, as it needs to be done whenever the flight feathers grow back. These birds are really good companions if you keep these guidelines in mind. They are very social, and if you don't play with them every day, you should have more than one to keep each other company.

Do your parents count ferrets as rodents? Because they are very active animals who love to play and you could easily adopt one because sadly people are abandoning their ferrets every day! They dont require any work from your parents because they can be litter box trained and can live in cages when they are not out running around and playing.

Cockatiels are the best answer for you.
They are extremely intelligent and playful. If you play and talk to them they will respond and act accordingly. Read a bit about them and you will see what I mean. You can even, if you accustomed them to you, leave the cage open and they get out and get back in the cage so they are not in a prison but a place they call home.

Well, that limits it...Iguanas are interesting, but they can get VERY BIG! I gave mine away when she was 5 or 6 years old, & 54" long! She also bit me while I was feeding her, twice! Dumb animals...biting the hand that feeds...

How about birds? Finches are cute & make nice noise. parakeets the same. Bigger birds are more expensive, but you can usually play with them. Not just look at them thru cage bars.

I have a canary. Sings to all kinds of music, really nice to look at, and mine is funny sometimes dances around to the music looking like its playing piano to the 50's music. Very low maintenance.

or... get a goldfish.

I have two sugar gliders. They can be found in most pet stores and are very adarable. They are also very fun to play with and they love attention. They don't get but about 6 ounces fully grown.

Don't get a rabbit...they need room to run around and, contrary to popular belief, need to be spayed and neutered just like any other pet.
