Well, I really can't say that will be happening this year, but sometime in the next 5 years is a definite possibility.

A lot of people have mentioned the lack of depth we have at forward, and I will be the first to tell you that this past year this was very true. However, this is not the same team that we had last year. Not by a long shot. Gone are scrubs like Konstantin Koltsov, Tomas Surovy, Jani Rita, Ric Jackman, Shane Endicott, Rico Fata, etc. They have been replaced by respectable role players like Jarkko Ruutu, Ronald Petrovicky, Mark Eaton, Dominic Moore, and Nils Ekman.

Instead of our third and fourth lines being made up of scoring AHL top line forwards, there are legitimate bottom 6 forwards on this team. With lines something like:
Ekman - Crosby - Armstrong
Malone - Malkin - Recchi
LeClair - Moore - Ruutu
Petrovicky - Talbot - Roy
This is a team that is greatly improved, but is very young. With time to create chemistry and gain experience, this squad will be hell to play against come December - January. This roster has some of the best pests in the league. Armstrong, Ruutu, Petrovicky and Talbot have all gained this infamous title and will show that this team is not one that you can take lightly.

The defense is also not as bad as most say. Last year we started the season with Sergei Gonchar, Rob Scuderi, Joe Melichar, Brooks Orpik, Ric Jackman, and Lyle Odelein. Ouch. This year we have Sergei Gonchar, Ryan Whitney, Noah Welch, Brooks Orpik, Mark Eaton, and Scuderi/Melichar as the 6th and Cairns as the enforcer/7th d-man.
Gonchar - Eaton
Orpik - Whitney
Welch - Melichar/Scuderi
Cairns
While this defense comes nowhere near the caliber of an Anaheim, Ottawa, or Detroit, it isn't near the bottom of the league.

Marc-Andre Fleury will be the starter from day one this year, as opposed to his past years of screwy player development. This kid has been constantly thrown back and forth from team to team against players in a wide range of talent. Being that he will be looked at as this team's go to goaltender, though, should greatly improve his confidence and in turn allow him to show case his amazing athletic ability and talent at his position.

So, Crosby + Malkin = Stanley Cup will most likely not happen this year, but don't expect the Penguins to be bottom feeders, either. They should be a competitive team that won't be a push over like they were last year. The playoffs are quite certainly a possibility, but don't bet the farm on it.

Crosby + Malkin + No Defense + questionable Goalie = Penguins at home watching the playoffs on TV.

Can't even think about a cup until they fix their defense situation. Crosby and Malkin can give them an offensive boost but they aren't miracle workers!

You need more than just 2 good players on a team to make it to the Stanley Cup or just be very lucky like the Hurricanes!

I too became questioning of 88 whilst i became examining the question, me thinks it could have been his mom who overdid it. initially examining you question and finding on the p.c.. i presumed it became somewhat plenty, then I study LITY's answer and notice that it rather is now the norm. i think while you're Max Talbot's dad you have much less risk of coming up the papers than while you're Troy Crosby. it rather is annoying to single out Troy if everybody does it, that mentioned i don't like it. The placed up game cup social gathering might desire to be with regard to the group and not the communities families. enable them to get their Mugshuts with Lord Stanley's Mug on the day the participant gets the cup. i might desire to be too a good number of a traditionalist yet i think of the room is sacred floor or maybe relatives get admission to might desire to be limited. it rather is in keeping with risk that Troy have been given extra face time with the cup than many of the 4th line adult males. the version between Troy and Claude the fraud is that Claude earned the main appropriate to drink from the darn element- 4 circumstances. in keeping with risk Troy rubbed off on Claude back interior the 80's.

You are kidding, right? Weren't they one of the worst team last year with Crosby?

The playoffs are a possibility, but still not something I would bet on.

Maybe in 10 years, but the Penguins need a defense and a goalie first.
