I booked my reservations near Las Ramblas b/c I heard Las Ramblas was where everything's at. But, after seeing some pictures on FLICKR, it seems like Las Ramblas is really a walking tourist trap. The pictures I saw showed lots of street performers, stalls, etc, nothing that different from stuff here in Los Angeles. From what people told me Las Ramblas was filled with great shopping in the day and a place to party at night.

I don't know about great shopping, but Las Ramblas is a great area to walk around, watch the tourists, and soak up some Barcelona culture. There is a great open market, there are stretches filled with sellers of birds, sections with florists, sections with artists, etc. The normal street entertainers are there, and there are lots of sidewalk cafés, ice cream places, etc.

I think you'll enjoy it. I certainly do.

I can't really address your question completely as I have never been to California (outside of an airport anyway), but I have been to Barcelona a number of times.

Yes, Las Ramblas is a tourist trap in which everything is overpriced. It is also a wonderful cultural experience to visit Las Ramblas. I don't use the word "shop" as a verb, but there is much to purchse there. I personally enjoy watching the street performers. I see them as artists who are sharing their culture with me and I am more than happy to toss a Euro or two into their bucket.

Others have mentioned the issue of crime. Are there pickpockets and muggers in Barcelona? Yes there are. As Las Ramblas is where tourists congregate, they are more prevelant than in other areas of the city. However, there are muggers and pickpockets in NY. Barcelona is no more dangerous than NY, London, or any other major city. Just use basic common sense and you will be fine.

Las Ramblas is to Barcelona what Broadway is to NY. However, there is more to NY than just Broadway. Las Ramblas is most certainly worthy of a few hours of your time; however, there is more to Barcelona than just Las Ramblas. Barcelona is a wonderful city - it is one of Europe's major cultural hubs. You made a good decision to visit Barca. You will have an incredible time. It is in my top five cities in the world.

Las Ramblas has history, culture, and architecture. It is touristy but hey! what do you expect? Some nice food markets with fresh fruits and vegetables can be found along Las Ramblas.

Las Ramblas has a lot of history, lots of the Catalan culture. It has nothing to do with LA.
I hope you appreciate it.

Nice during the day, tourists tend to get mugged during the evening. Be careful!!!
