Having gardened on the British Columbia coast for ever, where giant Banana Slugs reign, we have tried everything.

First and foremost PLEASE if you do decide to use "Slug Pellets or Bait" be sure to use a cotainer that cats and dogs can not get into as slug bait is deadly for them but attracts them as well.

We would use a plastic marg container or the like, with slug size holes cut around the edge, add slug bait, replace lid, turn upside down and place in garden where they are feasting. Place a rock on top to keep in place and prevent cats or dogs from opening.

The sunken dish of beer really does work, but ......you have to keep on top of refreshing the beer....

Slugs do not like scratchy things and they will avoid the crushed egg shells, coffee, diatimacious ( I know that is slelt wrong) earth and so on. Copper strips are said to be effective as well. But gee whiz, what if you have a big garden...

When our children were too young to say no, we would pay them a nickle for every slug they collected before dark each night... but they are grown up now .....

So my husband and I would get some therapy, each with our own pair of old scissors, and tour the garden just before dark and you can figure out the rest. Great after a day on the freeway and relieves road rage nicely.

The sharp crushed shells tear the slugs body when they try to crawl over the egg shells. No need to bake them they dry fine just sitting for a couple of days just crush and make a circle around what plant or plants your trying to protect.

Ok, lets sum all this up in one! True-A ring of rinsed crushed eggshells around plants as well as twigs, ashes is rough for slugs slimy bodies, but do you want to waste your time on something so unattractive? Besides they will just go elsewhere. True-half an orange/grapefruit placed upside down on ground will attract them and ants and whatever else (then need to be destroyed). TRUE- A saucer of beer/lemonade also will attract them & drowned them if your dog doesn't drink it first (mine would), attractive- no -waste of beer -Yes (even though I don't drink beer). TRUE-Slug pellets are harmful, also to birds and other creatures, and will not work when the pellet gets wet. Now that is a waste of MONEY, that could buy beer for yourself or a friend!! So here is my theory-Frogs/toads and birds feast on slugs. Daytime turn over rocks or move yard decor over if slugs are present, if the sun doesn't dry them up, the birds will find a snack. Evenings- same thing but the frogs/toads will get there midnight snack. PS. The pellets are harmful to pets and children as well! So pitch the shells, eat your fruit, save your time and money and go have a beverage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TOOTLES!

You don't have to bake them. Slugs apparently don't like sharp gritty things as they will hurt their soft little slimy bodies. You need a lot of crushed egg-shells though, and it is a good idea to rinse them in water first, otherwise the slugs will just be attracted to the residue and actually take the risk!

As another reader says, Coffee grounds work much better... trail a circle of them around the plants you want to protect. If you don't drink fresh coffee, then the grounds can be purchased from Starbucks, who bag up their grounds and sell them specifically for protection of slugs.. they won't crawl over the grounds to get to your plants... it's a great way of using your grounds, they shouldn't really be put on your compost heap, something to do with preventing the rotting process..

I've heard orange peel works well with Slugs & things,

Another one is to dig a small hole place an empty container eg Old Ice Cream tub in it & pour in beer. The slugs fall in & drown.

It's a bit cruel & waste of good beer but I'v heard it works.

I've never heard of using eggshells to stop slugs. I would think they would just FEAST on the leftover soft tissue that sticks to the shell.

Use salt instead. It works better. It's poisonous to them.

Why would you want to stop slugs? In a vegetable garden I can understand you not wanting them to ruin you whole crop. In that case salt will kill your plants too.

If these slugs are just cruising around minding their own business feed them some dry dog or cat food crumbs and enjoy watching them.
