This is both a reply and a question to those discussing the degree in linguistics! I too am intrested in this! My family comes from Norway, and I speak fluent Norwegian, and I spent 6 months in Russia, so I speak somewhat good Russian. I have a passion for languages. I know I can not really use my Norwegian professionally, based on the fact only 5 million people use it, but I love Russian. What training would you need to be a proffess. translator? What degrees? Linguistics? Let me know.\

Well, the US military could have used your talents.....20 years ago. I know, because that's what I did. Now, I'm not so sure. Working at the UN as a translator or something? Good luck!

To be a translator you'd do well to major in your chosen language and minor (or double major) in Linguistics. From there, you can get certified by a major board, such as the American Translators Association.
