No it has to be the same bank that your account is with. For example if you have Wells Fargo you can put it in any Wells Fargo ATM but you can't put it in Bank of America.

Well, from my personal experience, I've been able to deposit a check from my bank into another bank's atm.... HOWEVER, I've always made sure that on the other bank's deposit slip, there is a spot for Bank: and Account Number:. If not, I will not just deposit my check into it.
I would call the bank you want to deposit your non-bank check into and make sure ahead of time.

yes and no. Some bank require you to use only their atm and some do not and have what is called a Shared Deposit. There is usually fees when doing a shared deposit and it takes longer for it to post to your account.

ATM's not owned, or serviced by your bank will usually let you withdraw money for a fee, but I don't think these ATM's will accept deposits at all.

On the back of your ATM card there should be several logos - like mine has 'co-op network', 'credit union 24', and 'interlink'. Those are the logos you should look for on the bank's sign - that means that they share information and you can do a deposit at their ATMs. If you don't see any logos on their sign, ask. You can also contact your regular bank for info.
