Doctors recommend, firstly, breast milk. Then commercial formula. Always consult your pediatrician before feeding your infant anything unusual. I would maybe just call ask a nurse. There's always one in your local area at your Urgent Care- costs nothing and I'm sure they'll give you the go ahead.

However, here is a recipe for baby formula:

2 (12 ounce) cans evaporated milk
32 ounces water
2 tablespoons Karo syrup
3ml Poly Vi Sol Vitamins

Mix thoroughly.

Here's another recipe:

2 Cups - Goats Milk
2 Cups - Enriched Vanilla Rice Milk
1 T. - Black Strap Molasses
1 T. - Liquid Acidophilus
1 T. - Flax Seed Oil
1 t. - Liquid Vitamin C
1 t. - Liquid CalMag (calcium & magnesium)
1/8 t. - Wheat Germ (powdered)
16 drops - Trace Minerals (concentrated)
1 t. - Baby Vitamins (optional)

Doctors do not recomend homemade formula since it is not stable and there is no measure as to the exact amount of nutrients in it. If you cannot nurse, then use commercial formula.

There are also some new formulas in healthfood stores that claim to be organic or natural.

You can not replicate breast milk. Labs come close enough so that formula babies do almost as well as breast fed babies, but labs are still off.

Doctors do not recommend that you make formula at home. It would cost millions of dollars to set up a lab at home that would be capable of producing formula. And if you made a slight mistake your child could be damaged big-time. Recently, formula got into the Chinese market that had low levels of some essential nutrients. Many babies died and the culprits received prison sentences.

I would not fool around with making formula- it is too important that the balance of nutrients is just right. You could make your baby very, very sick even if it was just slightly off.

Baby food, on the other hand, is very easy to make a wholesome and homemade meal. I'd skip the homemade formula and wait to make baby foods instead.
