We had some plums given to us and my son really wants to plant them. I'm sure that they wouldn't grow. How can I make them grow, would they need to be fertilized first? I know nothing about growing plum trees.

The majority of plums are hybrids. Hybrid fruit trees almost always produce sterile seeds (they won't grow at all) and if they do grow there is a very small chance they would produce fruit and if it did produce fruit there is a very small chance it would produce plums like the one it came from. My advice would be save yourself the aggravation and throw it away.

But if you want to give it a try anyway, let the seed dry completely, put it in the refridgerator for 8 weeks and then put it in a small pot with bottom heat (about 75 degrees) and keep it moist--not soggy. If it is not sterile it should sprout in 4-5 weeks and then it's just a waiting game to see if it grows into a tree that is sterile or not.

just place the pit, point side down [not real important], in well drained pot of soil. Water when the surface of the soil gets dry.
I used to do this when I wanted to grow one. Just be warned that it's germination depends on how ripe [or mature] the seed was when the plum was picked. It might not grow so, warn your son so he keeps trying and doesn't get discouraged enough to give in to the failure. Maybe suggest some other kind of seeds to plant at the same time. That way if the plums don't grow and the other seeds do, he will know he just had a bad seed.
