Whether someone thinks that there are worse things in life than death would depend on an individual's beliefs, values and priorities.
For some, death is the ultimate thing to be feared and avoided at all costs.
Others would die before doing some things: betraying another or one's country, having to kill another, losing one's freedom or honor, etc.
Personally, I can think of some things I'd die for: to protect those I love from harm, to save the lives of others, to avoid living under a tyrannical government or if I had a chronic medical condition and was living with intolerable pain or in a vegetative state.

There are many, many things worse than death. What exactly about dying do people find so terrible? It is not an end, but a transition, another step along the way. How can anyone witness great cruelty and say that there is nothing worse than death?
Yet that doesn't mean it would be better to kill a suffering person. People often bear the suffering, because death is a change they are not yet ready to make. Giving up a few points is no reason to forfeit the game.

God Yes. There are things so bad that you can't even imagine, that you will find yourself praying for death. Death will seem like a sweet release or friend. Yea, whatever, you may think "Oh, that person's weak minded" and crap. But, what if everyone you've ever met, cared about, known, loved and was connected to was eaten alive infront of you or cut to pieces infront of you. And then you are tied up and pinned down getting beat to death and crushed, the pain stopping at an inch of your life, the pain-bringer caring for you until you heal nearly completely only to beat you the same way again. Could you imagine pain like that? Would you want to live if that happened, all within mere hours?

Hello
I am mostly paralyzed by pain due to a traumatic brain injury and the coma that followed it, but have the worst of it mostly under control with medication and help from a loving family and wonderful friends.
There are people who've been dumped in small rooms with no care where they just howl in agony. Their pain could be relieved, but the U.S. has strange notions about medical uses of some drugs so they can only writhe in agony with no hope of relief. I think that's far worse than death and if I knew I was going to be in that kind of situation, I would kill myself as soon as possible.
I think I'll take a break after answering your question. I think about it a lot and it's not very cheerful, but thanks for asking and please join my Bookdoctors Yahoo! group below and bring your friends with you.
Yours,
JB

That is a hard question. There are things that would be more painfull than death. As specially if they weren't resolved when death came.
Self loathing, Hatred, constant and unchangeable fear. To die without first being at peace would be worst.

I don't think anyone really knows. There are many things in life that are bad, but we cannot compare them because we have no objective evidence of what happens after death.

I know someone who said he'd rather die then lose an arm because he loves to play guitar and paint and feels his life wouldn't be worth living if he couldn't do those things. I personally feel that I would rather die then be tortured or live in isolation for the rest of my life. I think it depends on the individual.

Living in fear of death...you might as well be dead if you are gonna think about it all the time as it stops you from enjoying life.
