Black does not signify just the "color of the skin." It has to do with hair texture and facial features. People come in all shades and there are lots of ethnic groups who are dark, but not black. Indonesians,Polynesians, Hawaiians,Indians, Bangladeshis and others are example of this. White americans are sometimes so ignorant--they want to lump all asians toegether--for instance, all orientals are chinese or japanese in their eyes, when in reality, we have Chinese, Koreans, Jpapanese, Fillipinos, etc. Look at facial structure (cheek bones, nose, lips, eyes--not just skin!)

The colour of Indian skin is due to the pigment Melanin. It increases in number when exposed to skin. It protects the people from UV radiation and hence against most of the skin cancers. That is why the incidence of skin cancers in India is 1/10th of the incidence in Western countries. Hence the colour is the protection offered by Nature to protect from sun rays.

I saw a Globe Trekker episode in which there is a tribe of blacks on an Island off of India. They don't know how they got there and most of them have died off due to Western illnesses. They are protected now.

I just found this website on skin pigmentation.

Sun is very hot and intense in this region. It stimulates the pigments in the skin. But younger generation is getting fairer day by day, as they sit in air-conditioned rooms all day and never go out in the sun.
