You should begin getting PAP smears at the age of 18 or as soon as you become sexually active, then annually thereafter.
A general practitioner is able to perform this test - its a simple gynecological exam. If he/she finds something amiss, then you might be referred out to a specialist in gynecological disorders.
Gender is a matter of personal preference. I prefer female practitioners because they understand what things are going on with the female body - men just cannot comprehend mood swings, cramps, bloating, etc!

It is a PAP smear. Named after a doctor Papadolphus (I am not 100% certain if I spelled it right.) Every woman should have one at least once a year.

Pap smear.
And you should start getting them as soon as you become sexually active. The norm used to be every year but some are now saying that every 2 years is sufficient.
You can get your regular Doctor to do it or go to a Gynecologist.

It's a "pap smear" and you should have one done each year.
You can usually go to your regular doctor, or you can see a gynecologist. Some people prefer male doctors, some prefer female. It's whatever makes you most comfortable.
I think you're supposed to start going when you turn 18 or when you become sexually active, whichever comes first.

You should get pap smears done once a year when you become sexually active, or around age 18. They can be done by a family practice doctor or a gynecologist.
