How does one with a large chest (or any size) keep nipples from showing, especially when thick knits and fabrics are unflattering?

Its all about the neck line. If you wear a low cut v-neck, just layer it with a thin tank top. This way, you're being hip, but not slutty. If you have full figure breasts, your bras definitely matter. You need something that will hold your chi-chis properly and pretty much its wearable with anything. Don't worry about the unflattering, accessories are key to that. Your self-confidence helps too. if you feel good about something, everything just falls into place.

They're right about the Ipex bra, girly.
It's a patented technology...laminated cups that are lightweight, but gradually get thicker in the center for good nipple protection.
The bra goes up to a 38-DD. Go into your local store and have them measure you and try a few styles on. There is a full coverage cup, a demi,a wireless, and a push-up.
It's a very comfortable bra!
There is also the Body by Victoria shaping demi, and the Body by Victoria shaping full coverage. Both are lightly lined, but not padded.

Padded bras. Not to be confused with a "stuffed" bra, but just one with an extra layer of coverage. Lane Bryant has several nice styles (even if the rest of you isn't plus-sized), as well as many other department stores.

Victoria's secret has a great bra for that. It's not padded either. Bought 2 of them and love them! They are called the body by Victoria Ipex bra's. It's like a having a second skin!

I am a 36 D, and sometimes a DD...the way I do it is to buy a bra with a little bit of padding (not too much, because I don't want my breasts bigger than they already are!). This gives your breasts a nice shape and is very flattering.

Sometimes they're just gonna show and you have to expect that. However, wear a comfortable bra and wear tops that aren't too clingy. Try to stay warm and don't daydream about your significant other!

I hate it when my nipples are engraved in my shirt. To alleviate this, I wear a thin silk shirt underneath and then cotton over that. It always works.

Buy a bra with a lot of padding and if you are wearing tanks you can buy the bras with the plastic straps.
