Possible reasons:
Television and sedentary jobs - physical activity picks people up by creating endorphins in the brain. being sedentary is naturally physically depressive

The fact that the psychiatric/psychological/medical industry has diagnoses for these things now and there are drugs available to prescribe (which means people can make money and make a living from diagnosing and treating it - they have an interest in its existence)

People with leisure have always had depression - it's always been the leisure class, which has increased in the USA (imho). And rich people with hours to spare [to watch tv for example] are somehow more prone to depressive illnesses.

Actually with the recent anti-depressant medications being developed the drug companies advertise more so they can sell more. I don't think we are any more depressed than previous generations, I think the media just publicizes it more.

A whole generation made it through the depression era without Prozac and Xanax. But they made it by relying on each other.

The reason people are so depressed is because of the demands of society. People can no longer just "BE". I think the reason it has been brought up lately is the conclusion that it is deemed as a real disease. And they are finding "so called" medicine to cure it.

So here is the theology: Let me make people depressed by changing thier real reasons of existing and try to cure it with drugs.

I think it's because of the media, the war in Iraq and because of global warming. The war is causing so much turmoil - even back home in North America (with the economy). There are more natural disasters occuring in the world today. The media is so quick to show human tragedies rather than anything good happening.

People are depressed b/c they are trying to find happiness in material things, and short-lived excitement. They should search for contentment in important things like family, friends, nature, and God if they are so inclined.

Only these things can bring true long-lasting contentment.
