"Each of us is responsible for everything and to every human being" - Dostoyevsky

Aren't we responsible not just for our own actions but for what our politicians or society in general do?

Yes, to a degree. We elect our politicians, and we are responsible for letting them know our opinions so they can represent us. We are responsible for taking action in society against things we perceive as being wrong as well.

Don't just sit there, do something! Vote. Find a candidate and campaign. Volunteer for a non-profit organization! Take a stand, make a difference!!!

I thought I was finished with reading this man's quotes when I graduated.

What he means is that as human beings we are in charge of each other. Meaning that we need to make sure that all of human kind has adequate health care, a good education, and upstanding morals. If we can't take care of the sick, educate the children, and teach out children strong morals values than it is our own fault. If the responsibility of the human race is not ours, than who's is it? (God's of course - but that is besides this point). We all have the place in our societies. Doctors to help the sick, teacher to educate, Ministers for spiritual guidance. So yes, I do agree that this quote is true. We all have our places and are all responsible for someone. (Hot Dog Stand salesmen feeds us, The contractor builds us houses so he gives us shelter, and on and on). Thanks for posting this quote, I hope you get all of the answers that you are looking for. Have a great day!

How you approach the world and other human beings affects how others approach and so on. So if we all take a little more responsibility and not try to push it off on others then maybe we can all take more pride in the world we live in. We have a responsibility to treat others how we would like to be treated and to take from life, and give back at the same time.

well--we are somewhat responsible for placing certain politicians in office--we need to vote! I don't agree that we are equally responsible for others' actions. If that were true, than the people who commit evil would not be responsible, The way we need to respond is to defy these people. We are responsible if we remain silent in the face of injustice and do nothing to correct it. I think we should feel somewhat responsible for reelecting Bush as our President, but that does not absolve him of his responsibility to his country and its people.

I think that we have a responsibility to be the best person we can be and to attempt to instill that idea into people with whom we communicate.

But, I feel no responsibility for the actions of people who I can't control or influence in any direct manner.

I agree with the quote to a certain extent - we did elect the politicians - so therefore we are responsible for their actions!@

We are responsible for our own actions-you can only control yourself. I agree with the quote but not your interpretation of it.

yes --but there is a point where we can't control what "they" do. But we do have the responsibility to change what we can, I believe.
