you can be a self-taught photographer.
my dad started photography as a hobby about 20 years ago and it has progressed into being published in a few magazines, many art shows and museum shows and many award winning photos.
he read and still reads MANY books on photography and various mediums and formats.
he is part of a camera club and has been president of the club for many years.
he has mentored many people in photography, whether they were interested in portraits, artistic or nature photography.
i would recommend a few things:
-start reading. especially books about lighting, framing, locations, model posing, equpiment....
-identify what pleases you...black and white/color, digital/film, nature/abstract/portraiture....
-find someone to mentor. even if they don't have the same "vision" as you, they can help you understand lighting, equipment, etc....
-find a club. many times there are model shoots and guest speakers that the club sponsors and anything can help!
-get a job as a grip for a professional. this goes along with mentoring.
-have fun with it and don't get stuck in a rut. always try new things and it will get better.
take care!
EDIT:
in response to the answer about getting used to film. you cans till use film...that's fine, but digital can save you a bundle, at least in the beginning, until you learn more about framing, lighting etc.
i'd put some money into a high quality digital camera and a good photo program for your computer. a good quality printer can come later. you can always have your pics printed somewhere else for now.

To learn to be professional you need to take a course either from a community cllege, which is inexpensive, place like LA Film Academy or NY Fil Academy or Full Sail in Florida. My daughter is going through the same thing for the future. Good Luck lots of money in a good photographer

it rather is definitely no longer a properly-liked answer yet i do no longer think of school might help lots with a pictures enterprise. you will hire an accountant to do your taxes and in case you get sufficiently massive a bookkeeper to maintain your books. college won't tutor you ways to construct and industry a small enterprise. as far because of the fact the pictures itself is going, i'm able to ascertain the place the two a BFA or Journalism degree with a concentration in pictures might help, yet enable's settle for it, you the two have it or you do no longer. a great style of "it" is the desire to develop and not in any respect, ever settle. I used to run a coloration lab, even with the undeniable fact that, and that i observed greater than a number of very mediocre photographers make a rather good residing at it. It became extraordinarily unhappy, actually. "extraordinarily good" should not be good sufficient yet i assume specifically cases that's. have faith me, even with the undeniable fact that, those have been advertising and marketing successes. i do no longer propose it as a profession. i've got shot weddings and advertisement. I did properly for a jointly as yet a pair of customers went out of enterprise and that i became promptly bankrupt. If I do say so (ahem) i'm a great photographer, yet while your customers go out of enterprise you haven't any longer have been given any administration over that. I have been given out of the interest. It took years for me to get well creatively...merely contained in the final 24 months have I hit my stride as an artist back. specifically cases capturing for money will definitely smash your imaginitive force. in case you definitely insist...success, no longer undemanding paintings, elementary experience, endurance, and maximum of all expertise could be required to be triumphant.

Just look for some workshops on this area. You don't have to attend a university and they get right to the point. Or if that's not up your alley, go to Barnes and Noble and glance through "how to" photography books.

take a couple of photography class at a Jr college. Most photogs are free lance. so the best way that i know would be to take a lot of pictures of everything. start with film. learn to use film and learn to use the manual adjustments and learn to use the settings for light to make the effects that you want.

Get used to NOT shaking your hands a lot while taking a picture.
"What do u think this is?"
"I think... I don't know... a picture of a baby??"
"I think it's a bus.."
