I went for my first pre-natal check up today, at 18 weeks pregnant. My doctor was looking at my tummy and said that I was mal-nurished! I think I eat a lot, so I asked "Why do you say that?" And he said "Because you dont have much fat on your belly." That was all that he said though, he didnt go into detail. I weighed 118 (I'm only 5'3) when I got pregnant, and now, 18 weeks later, I weigh 129! I've always been kinda petiet, but healthy. I do not like, or eat red meat, but I eat everything else. Today, for instance, I've eaten: a bowl of cereal, a peach, a glass of OJ, an egg McMuffin, a granola bar, a fruit smoothie drink (not an actual smoothie), a turkey and cheese sandwich on whole wheat bread, and 2 handfuls of whole grain Sun Chips with a Gatorade. (It's 2:00) Does this not sound normal... or more than normal? I'm concerned... please state your opinion!

** Thanks for all the feed back! (And yes, I do take prenatal vitamins, and drink TONS of milk... on top of eating a calcium chew daily.)

You've received the opinion of a medical professional that sees people like you all the time, and you're willing to question it with the opinion of people on the Internet who couldn't really give a rat's *** about your malnourishment?

Why don't you provide your meal consumption log to your doctor instead? There could be a reason why you are malnourished.

From what you described, you've had minimal protein (which is what a baby needs), carbs, and lots of sugar. Not really a balanced meal. How about calcium? Do you still think you're not malnourished?

I wish you and your baby good health and good luck.

yeah....i don't think anyone can judge malnourishment by the fat on your stomach. very overweight people can also be malnourished if they eat only junk and no nutrients. you seem to be eating a pretty balanced diet. you're getting some fruits and whole grains, which is good. make sure you get some veggies in there too. and 11 lbs in 18 weeks is okay. especially if you're having morning sickness (which it doesn't sound like based on what you've eaten) some women even lose weight.

you don't sound malnourished to me at all! You are eating healthy for you and the baby. I had a small tummy with my pregnancy, but my doc never said I was malnourished. My family carries small babies.. all within the 6 pound range, so I had a smaller stomach than other women. And, I gained 31 pounds total at the end. Ever consider seeing another doctor?

Wow..waited a little late to start seeing the doc huh? But anyways, from what you stated you ate today, it sounds like you're getting enough food. Are you taking a prenatal vitamin? That's always helpful when pregnant. If you don't like what the doc is saying maybe you should switch doctors.

If he didn't elaborate when you asked the question maybe you should get a new doc. When you do get a new doc, ask him/her to evaluate your diet, write down everything you eat for one week prior to your appointment and if the new doc thinks there is a problem he/she will give you advice on how to make your diet better.

Don't forget your prenatals and drink lots of milk...or take calcium supplements that are safe (pharmacists can reccomend some)

Congratulations on the pregnancy...it sounds like you are eating fine to me!

Blessed be!

I think that is completely normal. He might want you to take a prenatal vitamin just in case. You still have a while to go. Don't let it bother you. At your next checkup tell him what you have been eating and how often. I'm sure he will say you are doing ok.

Good luck and my best wishes.

It sounds to me that you are eating fine. You may need to take a prenatal vitamin still. It can not hurt to take prenatals. You do not have to gain alot of weight to have a healthy baby. Gaining too much can be dangerous for your baby. A baby needs certain nutrients that can be in the vitamin that you may not eat enough of, like protein that is in the meat you do not like to eat & folic acid that is in green veggies.

I don't really understand what your doctor was getting at. You're not underweight to begin with, and you're gaining a healthy amount. You're eating great as well. I would continue to eat healthy, and ask him at your next visit to be more specific. Try not to worry about it, I think you're doing a great job. Make sure you're taking your prenatal vitamin too!!

You seem to be eating plenty! I'm not sure why he would say that to you. You weight seems to be fine also. Trust me, if you were malnourished you'd know it! Good luck and congrats on the little one!! :)
