SATA - Single ATA hard drive
Difference is very simple
SATA will have 7 pins, where as Simple Hard Drive contains 40 pins. DATA TRANSFER is very high in SATA when compare to Simple HDD. We need DONGLE to conect the SATA but for Simple HDD we reqd simple IDE cable

SATA or Serial ATA was a new standard with supported direct interface and data transfer to ur system;s motherborad as compared to ATA which was slower due to the fact that it uses IDE interface. In an IDE interface, its like a Que - devices have to wait for their turn to get resources.
SATA-I & SATA-II are the new standards which provide parallel access to ur hard disk thus higher speeds like 1.5 GBps for Sata-1 and 3 GBps for Sata-2.
SATA disks run at 7200rpm and above speeds while ATA runs at 5500rpms

SATA is definately faster then the older ATA or Ultra ATA or UDMA drives. SATA can now handle up to 3.0/ GBPS where as the older Ultra ATA 133 on transfers about 133/MBPS. This is actually using the SATA 1.0 streaming set. Here are links below on SATA and ATA specifications

SATA: Serial ATA... It has more speed as compared to normal hard drive....
normal hard drives are also known as PATA (Parallel ATA)....
Now, I think the name itself suggests u why there is a speed difference between these two types....
Data input/output is very fast as its serially connected but whereas in PATA, its just normal...
SATAs are normally used for servers, workstations etc etc...
I think my lil piece of info gave u a rough idea atleast....

the main difference is how much information can be transfered, sata can transfer 150megabytes per second, where as a simple hdd does not do as much, they also have sata2 which transfers 300megabytes per second

some motherboards do not support sata. the sata hdd cables are much smaller than a normal one. some people say satas are marginally faster.
