i will never forget the image of steve irwin talking to the camera while sharks were in a feeding frenzy all around him while he stood in the water...the guy was a crazy kook but he was fascinating, funny and very entertaining...i kind of felt one day his luck would run out the way he took risks dealing with wildlife but i would never have guessed it would take a stingray to be the culprit....my condolences to his friends and family....he was one of a kind and his legacy will continue as his shows run on animal planet

Steve Irwin was a Man living out his desire to entertain others with what he had a passion for, I'm sure that many people because of his death will get more involved in conserving and protecting Wildlife, and there will be no doubt "The Steve Irwin Wildlife Protection Fund", and that's a good thing. But, No, it has not inspired me one way or another.
I think everyone should play their part in whatever cause they choose.

I can't believe some of you people. Saying that Steve did not know what he was doing is folly. Don't get on here and blather on about something you are wholly ignorant about. Steve Irwin was a wildlife expert, and a da*n good one at that. He didn't do it for the ratings or the money (proceeds went directly back to the wildlife he was so willingly and lovingly protecting.) He was so passionate about what he did and he made such an impact on the world of conservation. People who didn't choose to be blinded by ignorance saw that he did believe in something worth fighting for. And he wasn't selfish... he fought so that the beauty of nature could be preserved for his own children and everyone elses. He wanted to educate and that's what he did. He educated those who were open to new ideas... not you ignorant people who make blind presumptions about a person with a hell of a lot more drive and integrity than you will ever have. Show the man some respect. He died for a cause that many of us hold dear. I don't see you calling the soldiers fighting and dying in Iraq selfish for putting themselves in harms way.

Most definitely. He was a truly amazing person.
He certainly didn't die rich, he loved what he was doing however put his earnings back into the environment.
He bought tracts of land in Australia and America so animals would not lose their habitat.
Steve wasn't a show pony, what you see on the TV is exactly how he was, dedicated to teaching us, conservation and he had a great knowledge of wildlife.
I have heard donations have been coming in from around the world in support of his fund The Wildlife Warriors which will help his work continue however this will be an ongoing thing for me as Steve's dream must be kept alive.
It is a way for me to show ongoing love for the legend that was The Crocodile Hunter.

Loved the guy, thought he was was a wonderful asset to the people - down - under. Because of his efforts in conservation fund raising for the Australian Zoo his parent opened, I became aware of animals I never knew were endangered. He will be sorely missed, and I hope it shows people that any wildlife is just that wild. So I hope efforts will continue to assist all wildlife before there is none left.

He was inspiring, funny. And more important to the proliferation of animal conservation shows and networks than Jacques Cousteau and Jack Hanna and Wild Kingdom combined.

My hats off to him.

he was a great ambassador for what he was passionate about - his family and protecting and conserving animals of all types (even the less popular ones). he made animal planet what it is today and taught me so much about animals in his myriad shows. i think his loss will be felt for a long time and hope that someone with his knowledge and charisma is able to fill the large shoes left empty by his untimely death. my condolences to his family.

even if you didn't always agree with how fanatical he was in his views or loves of strange and unpopular animals, you had to admire and respect his dedication to his work. unafraid, unapologetic, and uncompromising.

He hasn't neccesarily made me want to do exactly what he did, but he is an example of not being afraid to do what you love regardless of political or public pressure. He knew what inspired him and he wasn't afraid to speak out.

and btw - to the people saying he was selfish for doing what he did - his wife knew what he did for a living before she married him and they had children. she supported him and was a partner to him in many of his adventures. it is not thoughtful to say that he was an idiot or careless when you weren't living his life, or in his shoes. he knew the risks he took and so did his wife. it was their life choice, even if most of us choose to live tamer and quieter lives. :)

Well, he helped me see crocodiles as something more than an environmental nuisance or a future accessory item (shoes, belt, briefcase). His enthusiasm for these otherwise feared and unlovable creatures was touching.
