Answer is easy, it's not your legs you are uncovering its your feet. The two areas of the body that do most for temperature regualation is your head and feet, even noticed that when the weather gets cold we put on hats and boots and thick socks? Same goes in hot weather, we don't wear as much clothing and we wear sandals and no socks ( I hope as thats a serious faux pas!)

Because it's easy to do.

the leg acts as a heat sink, letting the heat escape from the body where it uncovered. As a technique it works quite well - you could do it with the arm, but there's more surfice area on the leg.

The body would be idea, but the chances are that you would cool down too much - so we only tend to do that on really warm night; ie: sleep uncovered.

It's simply easier with the leg and yes, it does work.

I do the exact same thing! My theory is that my feet have alot to do with whether the rest of my body feels hot or cold. For example, if me feet are cold, then so is the rest of me. If my feet are hot or clamy, then so is the rest of my body.
So maybe we stick out feet outside our covers to cool us down when we're feeling a bit too hot in bed! I always notice that when my feet start getting cold, they come back in under the covers and curled up in my duvet!

Our heads are already out of it, they control our body heat but it's your legs that have the heat they give off reflected back to them by covers, putting them out gives them contact with air or at least not have the heat returned. Your torso remains fairly cool by itself and it doesn't affect you much whether you have covers on or not.

There are probably a lot of blood vessels in feet, so when you put out your feet the air cools the vessels, thus cooling down the whole body.

it works for me too. i think in bed our waist down becomes more hot coz our top half is mostly outside the covers. so giving our legs cool air feels good.
