Go to a local bulk store like Costco or Walmart and ask the guys on the loading dock to help you out. FREE, nice word, no?

Go to the grocery store and ask them to give you some boxes. Try other retailers, they get the merchandise in boxes, and have to do something with the boxes. Liquor stores have good strong boxes that aren't too big to easily carry. See if your local warehouse club, like Costco or Sam's will let you have some boxes.

grocery stores, retail stores (big ones like marshalls or tj maxx). having used to work at a marshalls a long time ago, I know for a fact they dispose of literally tons of boxes daily from all the shipments they get. I mean tons of boxes. so I'm sure if you go in and ask the manager nicely, I'm sure they would be willing to part with as many boxes as needed. the one I worked at had a trash compactor in the backroom they used to squish all the boxes together. that's how many boxes they had.

go to the grocery store or the liquor store in the mornings and they will let you have them for free. Also, I save the copy paper boxes from work there free to.
Run a free add in the local paper-BOxES NEEDED for MOVING.
I did this and got an overwhelming response.

Office Depot, Linens & things, Best Buy - in their dumpsters
Most stores will not "save" boxes for you - they are literally flattened as they are emptied on the store floor.
Find out delivery days for the big stores, especially Circuit City and Best Buy and make runs in the afternoon and early morning. We found yards and yards of bubble wrap from Best Buy dumpster.

Try craigslist.org for your state/city. You can usually get free moving boxes from someone. Check under the free section.

Talk with a local store and see if they will keep boxes for you.
Good luck with the move!
